Biopolymers from water research group Wetsus
We collaborate with Wetsus on a long-term research of biopolymers from water with Unilever, Stowa, and SNB. Research in this theme is to build on and bridge fundamental bioprocess engineering and materials science with downstream commercial opportunities for platform chemicals and bioplastics. The theme is an incubator to reach optimal insights and strategies to produce value added biopolymers for industry in combination with the ongoing demands for increasingly more effective wastewater treatment methods.
At Wetsus, PhD students continuously research the PHA accumulation process, the extraction process, and PHA characterization. At the end of this year (2024), a PhD project will start to develop new strategies to use PHA for coatings, focusing on controlled-release fertilizers.
